Hannah More
North Point Builders was the Design-Build contractor for the historical renovations to the Hannah More Center. The Forbush School Hannah More Campus is part of the private, nonprofit provider Sheppard Pratt. The school is a special education day center for 115 students ages 4 to 21 with emotional disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and related disorders. The Hannah More Center is a historic structure built in 1832 and was re-built in 1857 following a fire. Buildings on the site were designated a landmark building by Baltimore County Landmark Preservation Commission (LPC) and Maryland Historic Trust (MHT) circa 1980.
North Point Builders and our design team worked closely with Hannah More, Baltimore County, MHT, and LPC to identify components of the building that required restoration. Restoration work included all masonry, doors and entrances, and exterior window restorations. As part of restoration, North Point Builders completed abatement of lead paint and asbestos containing materials. Special design and restoration work went into the crimped metal seam and standing seam roof, cornice work, stair, and ornamental railings.
Special Qualities
Although this is a private facility, the project was publicly funded by Baltimore County due to the historic status of the building. With limited funds, North Point Builders was contracted to survey existing conditions and prioritize repairs based on cost and need. After initial surveying and itemized budgeting of all restoration components, North Point Builders worked with invested partners to develop a phasing plan to allow restoration to proceed with ongoing campus activities and as funding became available.
