Sparks Elementary
North Point Builders was the General Contractor for the Sparks Elementary School addition located in Baltimore County. Originally constructed in 1998, the 54,000 square foot facility was designed to serve a student capacity of 410 students. Within a span of 16 years, the enrollment rate had grown by 38% with 566 students having to attend a school too small to hold them. The school was utilized modular classrooms to accommodate student enrollment. Baltimore County Public Schools decided the only solution to this growing population was to construct an addition.
The 12,000 square foot addition has capacity for over 200 students. The new wing includes 9 classrooms, restrooms, an electrical room, IT distribution center, janitorial areas, support and storage spaces. Exterior construction involved sitework, landscaping, storm water management, parking lot upgrades, relocation of two portable classrooms, and the addition of a new playground.
Special Challenges
Because construction occurred during the school year, the project team adapted a process to safely and efficiently work around the students, parents, teachers, and staff. As the new wing was built adjacent to the main student drop off area, North Point Builders coordinated delivery times and methods to prevent delays and safety hazards.
The project was scheduled in multiple phases with firm deadlines. Students and staff were moved in and out of spaces during weekends so construction could continue meeting the critical dates of completion. As a result, the teaching process was also able to continue with minimal interruption throughout the school year.
