20 North Main Street Methodist Church
North Point Builders was the General Contractor for the Historic Church Building located in Bel Air, Maryland. The building is a National Registered Historic Landmark Structure. We were responsible for the construction management and field coordination of the entire project.
The empty church owned by Harford County was renovated by North Point Builders for the organization SARC (The Sexual Assault/Spouse Abuse Resource Center). SARC is a confidential support system for victims and survivors of domestic violence. With the agency progressively growing, SARC needed more facilities and resources for their mission. The church was converted into an office and treatment center for SARC services.
North Point Builders managed new and restorative work throughout the project process. After the interior demolition was completed, the team installed a new elevator, copper gutters, downspouts, mechanical and electrical systems. Additionally, 3,000 square feet of office space was created with a new mezzanine level in the sanctuary space. Site work and landscaping was also part of the project scope.
Special Challenges
Historic records show that the original 20 North Main Street church was built in 1888. Being the only brick Gothic church in the town of Bel Air, it’s an incredible and surviving sample of the 19th century. As time passed, the church experienced more renovations, but was eventually sold to Harford County. Because many components of this church are over 130 years old, special attention and care was required. Historic restoration work was completed on plaster walls, wood finishes, slate roof, exterior stone, mortar joints, brick, windows, and church steeple. The project was a successful unity of interior modernization with exterior historic preservation. Our team is proud to be a part of preserving historical structures while providing places for the community to receive beneficial resources.
