Construction Education Academy & Offices
North Point Builders was the Construction Manager for the Associated Builders and Contractors of Greater Baltimore’s (ABC) new Construction Education Academy and office headquarters. The new academy provides apprenticeship, training, and career opportunities for Marylanders to further promote the construction industry. ABC’s new academy and offices reside in the historic Hoen & Co. Lithograph complex and are part of the Cross Street Partners initiative to revitalize and develop the East Baltimore neighborhood.
28,000 SF of the Hoen & Co. Lithograph complex was renovated for this adaptive reuse project. What was previously known as building no. “5” and “6” now makes up the training center portion, now known as The Skillforce Center. The Skillforce Center consists of a large lobby/gallery area, 10 classrooms with smart technology capabilities, 6 shops for various craft trades, restrooms, and storage areas. Building “4” now hosts ABC’s office headquarters with 10 private office areas, huddle rooms and work stations, a conference room, large training room and café area.
Special Qualities
The Hoen & Co. Lithograph complex was originally constructed between 1885 and 1963. The building complex is the only remaining site that represents the Hoen & Co.’s rich history. To preserve the incredible history of the building, many original architectural elements such as windows, massive wood roof beams and interior brick walls were incorporated into the design. One of the most incredible historical pieces salvaged and integrated into the project was a 12-foot-tall, 3,000-pound iron furnace door that is now prominently featured at the front of the office area. Though the facility has modernized and gained a new purpose, these salvaged historical elements sustain the connection with the incredible stories of our local community’s culture and past.
