Perryville Police Station
As a General Contractor, North Point Builders built the new Perryville Police Station in Perryville, Maryland. This one-story, 8,000 square foot building was completed in one year and has provided the Police Department with a modernized and secure facility.
The Perryville Police Department had been operating out of a double-wide trailer for many years. Operating a police force with limited resources was an overwhelming challenge and the Department was eager to build a new facility. North Point Builders developed strong relationships with the Mayor of Perryville, Town Administrator, Chief of Police, Lieutenant, and Architect throughout the project to ensure the new building was precisely what they envisioned.
The new station was constructed in a classic American municipal style with brick, stone veneer, and a cast stone entrance façade. The station includes a vaulted-ceiling lobby with adjoining conference/training room, offices, work & living spaces including a full kitchen, showers and bunk rooms, a sally port, interrogation rooms, holding cells, secure evidence storage areas, and an armory. Security design measures include solid masonry walls, bulletproof glazing on all exterior windows,an integrated security system with electronic access controls, intrusion detection & CCTV, tamper-proof penal plumbing fixtures in holding cells, and a 250 kVA diesel generator for emergency power.
The structure consists of solid masonry construction with a wood truss hip roof, a dual sprinkler system of dry-pipe in the attic, wet-pipe in the occupied space below, and an efficient VRF mechanical system.
Special Challenges
Before constructing the building, North Point Builders had to complete a storm drain tie in required for this building and future site development. This new storm drain line was to be run directly under the Norfolk Southern Railway main freight line. In order to install the new quarter-mile length of storm drain, North Point Builders utilized a jack and bore method. This work involved a high level of coordination with the Town of Perryville, Norfolk Southern Railway and their freight schedules to ensure the area was safe for construction, public access, and freight transportation.
Upon completion of the new storm drain work, North Point Builders encountered a significant quantity of unsuitable soil. Although soil borings did not indicate unsuitable material, a large vein of organic earth ran through the site. We worked closely with the Town of Perryville to evaluate remediation options. It was determined the most economical solution was to undercut the site and provide geotextile material and controlled fill. Despite this significant increase to scope, the project was completed within the original schedule.
With mutual coordination, top quality craftsmanship, and effective communication, the Perryville Police Station project’s success now allows the department to safely and effectively serve their community.
