Padonia Elementary
North Point Builders was the General Contractor for the Padonia Elementary School in Cockeysville, Maryland. The original fifty-year-old school had a capacity of 311 students. With enrollment of 530 students and growing, the school facility was struggling to keep up with the demands. Students were learning in temporary trailers and had to walk through rain and snow to transfer from class to class. The lack of learning space and out-of-date facilities made the addition and renovation a dire necessity.
This project included a 10,000 square foot wing addition and an 11,000 square foot renovation to the existing Baltimore County School. The new masonry addition to the existing school consists of eight (8) classrooms and a kitchen storage room. The original cafeteria was opened up by utilizing adjacent spaces to increase student capacity. The gymnasium and rec room were converted into classrooms, a music room, teacher’s lounge, storage spaces, and restrooms. The project scope also enlarged the teacher parking lot and installed two new playgrounds.
Special Qualities
The original proposed phasing plan for this project included 5 phases of construction over a 2-year period of time. North Point Builders coordinated with the school administration and Baltimore County Public Schools to develop a new phasing plan to accelerate the schedule while accommodating the school’s needs.
The new phasing plan consisted of 3 phases. The project began by building the new masonry addition. Over the summer break, North Point Builders completed the renovations to the original cafeteria and gym, allowing new classrooms and the enlarged cafeteria to be used for the 2017-18 school year. Once school resumed, the area for the new teacher’s lounge, storage area, and restrooms was isolated to complete renovations in conjunction with the school activities. These areas were ready for occupancy following Christmas break. The final interior finishes to the addition and modifications to the exterior areas including the playgrounds and teacher parking were completed the following summer. Having collaborated with the school, North Point Builders was able to complete this project six months ahead of schedule, minimizing the disruption of ongoing learning.
