Severn River Middle School
North Point Builders was the General Contractor for the Severn River Middle School renovation in Anne Arundel County. The school was originally built in the 70’s, utilizing the once-popular open concept floorplan. After decades of noisy and distracting learning environments, the school needed to enclose these open spaces to provide teachers and students with a private classroom setting.
The 70,000 square foot school renovation included interior demolition as well as demolition of all mechanical, electrical, and fire sprinkler systems. The project required a new fire protection sprinkler system throughout the entire facility to allow classroom walls to be constructed. All the classrooms were completely modernized with SMART board technology, microphone systems, and dimmable lighting systems.

Because the school was occupied during the renovation process and had a critical completion date, the project required six phases with some phases working round-the-clock. North Point Builders collaborated with the school administration to provide swing space for students and staff as renovations within each phase progressed. As areas were completed, classrooms were relocated on weekends to avoid learning interruptions. Since the entire building was receiving new mechanical, electrical, and sprinkler systems, the project had to be phased in a way that allowed existing systems to remain operational while new systems were installed. By implementing the phasing plan, the project was completed within the original timeframe and maintained the school’s daily operations with minimal impact.
