North Laurel Community Center
North Point Builders was the Construction Manager for the North Laurel Community Center. Located in Eastern Howard County, the Community Center is shared by the Departments of Recreation & Parks, Health, Police, and the Office on Aging. The County aspired to provide public services and recreation facilities to community members of all ages.
The 63,000 square foot structure was designed and constructed with the County’s vision in mind. The new center has a gym, recreation rooms, daycare center, senior and senior plus areas, multi-purpose rooms, health and human resource spaces, and kitchen. The building also designated a space for the Howard County Police satellite office.
The building structure is steel, masonry and concrete. Brick, ground face block, built-up roof system, and storefront make up the building’s shell. Site work included demolition, grading, utilities, paving, curbs, sidewalks, benches, and over 52 acres of landscaping.
Special Qualities
North Point Builders fulfilled sufficient sustainable design and procedure criteria to achieve the first USGBC Silver LEED Certified building in Howard County. Several “green” standards that were implemented include:
- Limiting land disturbance
- Selecting renewable resource products
- Recycling on-site construction waste
- Upholding dust control and air quality standards
- Installing a “Well Farm” – a Geo-Thermal System
