Hernwood Salt Barn

­North Point Builders was the Design-Build Contractor for the Baltimore County Salt Storage Facility located in Hernwood, Maryland. Western Baltimore County was in need of a large facility to hold 12,000 tons of salt that would be used to maintain wintry road conditions. Upon completion of this project, the Hernwood Salt Barnbecame the largest enclosed salt storage facility in the state.

NPB provided all site development plans, permitting, Building Construction, Site Utilities, Access Roads, Lighting and Power to the Facility.

The Building is a unique Heavy Timber Wood Frame structure that is fabricated in Ithaca, New York. The building type has been used in many State Highway Facilities across the state. This was the second such Facility NPB performed for the County, although this one was the largest.

Baltimore County presented a concept design to NPB to provide pricing. The original concept was designed using Concrete and Metal Roof Structure. (both not salt friendly) The costs for this facility were way above budget. NPB having performed this type of construction years ago for Baltimore County suggested the Wood Design. This saved the County over $500,000.

The County issued a Purchase order and NPB proceeded with the work completing just in time for the 2015 Winter season.
